The South Australian Genealogy & Heraldry Society Inc formed in 1973 to promote and encourage the pursuit of family history and allied subjects in South Australia.  The objects of the Society are:

1. To promote, encourage and foster the study, education, research and knowledge of genealogy, heraldry and other allied subjects.
   
   
2. To publish appropriate material and operate a reference and lending library and research centre.
   
   
3. To prepare, record and establish reference material related to genealogy, heraldry and other allied subjects.
   
   
4. To preserve, record and acquire family records and other genealogical material.
   
   
5. To liaise and reciprocate with other bodies having similar aims and objects.
   
   
6. To convene and conduct meetings of members for the purpose of furthering the objects of the Society.

The society has no political or religious affiliations. It is affiliated with the Australasian Federation of Family History Organisations (AFFHO), the English based Federation of Family History Societies (FFHS) and the Scottish Association of Family History Societies (SAFHS).

The society's membership of over 2,800 makes it the largest family history society in South Australia.  In June 1987, the Society moved into its current premises, the former Unley Institute, which was subsequently purchased by the Society in July 1995.  During 1997, major extensions were added and we are currently undertaking an upgrade to the interior design and layout of the heritage building.

On this website, you will find many of the major activities currently undertaken by the Society in the pursuit of its objectives.  As the website develops, we intend that it will address some of the needs of its remote members and the public who cannot attend in person.
