Many
South Australians have links with Scotland. The Scottish Group
of the Society was created by members with particular interests
in their Scottish ancestors and/or the descendants of those who
came to Australia, especially South Australia. Group member's
interest cover many regions of Scotland and we are always happy
to improve the coverage! The Group has considerable experience
and expertise in Scottish genealogical matters, but do not let
that put you off coming along. We do not know it all by any means
and we are always glad to improve our collective knowledge.
The Scottish Group is a small interest group
within the Society and conducts an active program to support Scottish
research. We sometimes have a speaker on a topic of interest.
The talks, together with the opportunities the meetings provide
for informal discussion with other members, ensure that the meetings
are informative and friendly.
The Scottish group was instrumental in gaining
affiliation with the Scottish
Association of Family History Societies (SAFHS).
The group maintains a series of folders housed
in the Society Library on the south wall to assist researchers
with their Scottish research. The group also maintains a card
index known as Scottish People which records all references to
Scottish folk found in Australian records by members of the group
during their researching.
We also assist the Library Committee by suggesting
suitable purchases to add to the Scottish material in the Society's
collection. At the request of the Library Committee we also comment
on the suitability of material for inclusion in the library. The
group also reviews the suitability of materials for inclusion
in the Library as submitted by the Library Committee and others.
Obviously we are interested in our own family
research but we also want to help others. Firstly we would like
to encourage other members of the Society, with Scottish connections,
to join us at our meetings. You will be made most welcome. If
you are unable to come to the Society Library for some reason
- be it distance, timing or whatever - then please let us know
how we can help you further your Scottish family research. We
cannot guarantee success but we will certainly try to help.
If you would like further information about the
Group, or if you have some ideas on how we can help you or other
members of the Society then please contact
the convener of the Group.
Thanks.
Hope to see or hear from you soon.
