Welcome

The Irish have been very conscious about their heritage always, whether they are in their motherland, or in the many parts of the world to which they have spread. This is something we should all remember this year in particular.

2011 has been designated as “THE YEAR OF THE IRISH” and it is up to us to make it as memorable as possible. Who knows? It may be the only year we get for a century. We are already into March. Almost a quarter of the year has gone, so lets all pull together and see that our IRISH projects, “Irish born people who came to South Australia 1836-1885” and “The Irish Orphan Girls” come to fruition, because it is they that will tell the story of the early Irish in South Australia, whose history has been so neglected. They were not favoured migrants, but came here as a work force, in time of famine in their own country.

Where would South Australia have been without the Irish? The early settlers were not able, and did not want to do the hard labour of setting up the new Colony. The Irish were starving in the 1847 famine, so they came and worked giving their labour for little more than their food. In the first fifty years of the Colony, it was the Irish who helped found the State by their labours. From that foundation the State has grown to what it is today.

Irish Group Philosophy:-
Irish Australian kinship to be sought and remembered.

Our meetings enact this by having a gathering of like minded people sharing and helping search for the elusive Irish and having a grand time in the process.

Irish research can be difficult as those who have travelled down that path have found. In many cases, family names and places have succeeded in achieving multiple derivations on leaving Ireland. Joining our group may assist you in furthering your research.

Speakers add greatly to understanding our History and People - note our programme and notice board.

For those visiting the SAGHS Library there maybe some helpful information in our Groups folders. Located on the south wall of the library and Green with Shamrock to help identify. Of special interest is an index of names being researched by our group. Have a look and fill out a form.

Come and join us!
