A small team of volunteers undertake extensive microfilming of
records as they are made available to the Society by various agencies.
Often we film records for no charge in return for the retention
of a copy for our own collection. Usually this material results
in the production of microfiche for library users.
Such material includes:
burial registers
newspapers
church records
The team also undertakes extensive work for other project managers
and especially the BDM Re-indexing Project where the numerous
registers held by the SA Registrar of BDM are filmed to facilitate
the indexers' work.
It is recognised by the Society that the days of significant
microfilming projects are coming to an end as technology overtakes
the process. The Society is looking at the concept of digitising
records and the growing use of CDs as the medium to distribute
this material. We recognise that microform is the appropriate
format for long term preservation of records and we will work
cooperatively and support the State Records of SA, the National
Archives of Australia (Adelaide Office) and the State Library
of SA to ensure this work continues but we do see this as a primary
role for a family history society.
