SA BIRTHS DEATHS AND MARRIAGES RE-INDEXING PROJECT

Projects | BDM | Cemeteries | Newspapers | Filming

CD ImageThis project (known as the BDM Project) created a set of new indexes to selected periods of the District Records for the South Australian Registrations of Births, Deaths and Marriages.  It commenced in 1991, under an agreement between the South Australian Government and the South Australian Genealogy & Heraldry Soc. Inc.  and was completed in 2006.   During the 16 years of the project, it was overseen by a project officer and a committee and was supported by a large team of volunteers.

The indexes were originally released in book form (A4 soft cover – only limited copies of some sets available), on microfiche and on CD-ROM format both of which are available for purchase from the Society's Bookshop.

    The indexes are:

    • Births       1842 to 1906
    • Marriages 1842 to 1916
    • Deaths      1842 to 1915
    • Births       1907 to 1928
    • Marriages 1917 to 1937
    • Deaths     1916 to 1972

The indexes are an invaluable resource for researchers but they should not be considered as definitive by researchers as not all births, deaths and marriages were registered.  Nevertheless, the indexes are the most comprehensive records available.  Other records should be referred as an alternative source of information.

What you will find in the indexes?

    • Births: Child's name, sex, parents' names, date and place of birth, residence/place of birth, father's occupation, mother's maiden name, Registration District, BDM Registry reference.
    • Marriages: Date and place, bride and groom's names occupations and ages, couple's previous martial status (after March 1868), fathers' names (after Aug 1856), Registration District, BDM Registry reference.
    • Deaths: Name, sex, age, date and place of death, informant if a relative and relationship, Registration District, BDM Registry reference.

Please Note: The South Australian Birth, Death and Marriage registration records remain under the control of the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages.  Neither the original nor the indexed registration records have been released for access via the internet.
